In the most simplistic form, this is what Buddhism teaches “everything changes”.

In my last post I talked about the changing seasons and harnessing the transformational energy.  But most of the time, change is out of our control and challenges our balance.  Many of us (including me!) struggle to accept the impermenance of life.  When change occurs that is perceived as negative, we may: 1) become depressed, longing for the way things were; 2) become anxious, worried about what the future will look like; and 3) grieve at the loss of an important piece of our life.

With the hurricane Harvey and Irma, the changes and devastation that were forced upon many families are beyond comprehension.  When a loved one is suddenly taken away, the sense of loss may be all consuming.  When a home is destroyed, we lose our safe space and sense of security.

While contemplating my concern for family and friends affected by hurricanes, I was reminded of this Buddhist teaching of Everything Changes.  If we fear change and are too attached to our current state, we miss out on living.  Nothing is guaranteed so in the moments of bliss, take notice.  Change can cause devastation and loss but in order to appreciate the joyful moments, these painful emotions must be felt.  Change makes room for negative and positive experiences.  Just like the rain helps us appreciate the sun, change forces us to recognize the joy we feel.

By being present and in the moment, we can experience the changes knowing that this too is temporary.
